There's no single global plug standard, so the world uses letter codes β Type A, Type B, Type C, all the way to Type O β to describe a plug's physical shape (how many pins, their thickness, spacing, and whether there's a ground pin). Taiwan, Japan, and the USA use Type A/B, which are two flat pins (B adds a round ground pin); continental Europe commonly uses Type C/F, two round pins; the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia use Type G, three thick rectangular pins. Many countries have more than one type in circulation at once (Thailand, for example, has A, B, C, and O sockets all in use) because plug standards evolved based on which country's electrical system historically influenced them β it's not the case that every country has exactly one plug shape. An adapter's only job is converting the plug's physical shape so it fits the local outlet β that's a completely separate question from voltage.

Say you're heading to Japan from Taiwan: Type A/B plugs, 100V, 50/60Hz β almost identical to Taiwan's Type A/B, 110V, 60Hz. The plug shape matches and the voltage falls within the compatible range, so you basically don't need an adapter or a converter β your phone charger works as-is. Now say you're heading to Italy from Taiwan: Type C/F/L plugs, 230V, 50Hz β the plug shape is completely different from Taiwan's, so you'll definitely need a shape adapter. The voltage also jumps from 110V to 230V; most phone and laptop chargers support the 100β240V world-voltage range, so check the INPUT label and you're generally fine.
