Why weight by credit hours instead of averaging every score equally?

If you just add up every course's score and divide by the number of courses (a simple average), each course counts equally regardless of how many credits it's worth — but a 4-credit required course represents far more time invested, and carries far more weight toward graduation, than a 1-credit gym or elective course. A weighted average multiplies each score by its credit hours before summing, then divides by total credits — so heavier courses have proportionally more influence on the final number. This is the calculation that actually reflects your real overall performance for the term, and it's what most schools use when computing an official term average.

A concrete example: a heavy course with a low score hurts more than a light course with a high score helps

Suppose a student takes a 4-credit General Physics course and scores 65, a 1-credit PE course and scores 95, a 2-credit English course and scores 80, and a 3-credit Calculus course and scores 72. A simple average (ignoring credits, just averaging the four scores) gives (65+95+80+72)÷4 = 78 — which looks decent. But the weighted average gives (65×4 + 95×1 + 80×2 + 72×3) ÷ (4+1+2+3) = 731 ÷ 10 = 73.1 — nearly 5 points lower. The reason is clear: Physics only scored 65, but it carries 4 credits, so it drags the overall average down far more than the 95 in the 1-credit PE course can pull it back up. Why isn't there a single standard GPA conversion table?

Many countries, including Taiwan, record grades on a 0-100 percentage scale, while US, Canadian, and many other universities commonly use a 4.0 (or 4.3, or 4.5) GPA scale instead. The catch is that the exact rule for "does an 85 map to 4.0 or 3.8" is set independently by each school — there's no international body or education ministry that mandates one universal conversion table every school must follow. Some schools cap A+ at 4.3, others cap at 4.0; some schools set the passing threshold at GPA 1.7, others at 2.0. As a result, the exact same 85 score can convert to a slightly different GPA depending on which school's table you use, which is why any GPA conversion tool (including this one) can only offer a "common reference value," not a guarantee that it matches your own school's official number.

Full worked example: weighted average and GPA conversion for 4 courses, step by step

Using the same example: General Physics (4 credits, 65), PE (1 credit, 95), English (2 credits, 80), Calculus (3 credits, 72). Step one, the weighted percentage average: numerator = 65×4 + 95×1 + 80×2 + 72×3 = 260+95+160+216 = 731; denominator (total credits) = 4+1+2+3 = 10; weighted average = 731÷10 = 73.1. Step two, convert each score using this tool's reference table: 65 falls in the "63-66 → 2.0" bracket, 95 falls in "90-100 → 4.3," 80 falls in "80-84 → 3.7," and 72 falls in "70-72 → 2.7." Will the GPA this tool calculates match my school's official GPA exactly?

No guarantee. This tool uses a widely cited general reference conversion table, but the actual GPA conversion rule used by your school or country may differ. For anything official — scholarship applications, transfer credit, study abroad — always check the official conversion table published by your school's registrar. The number here is meant only as a rough personal reference.

I have a Pass/Fail course with no percentage score. How should I enter it?

The simplest approach is to just leave it out of the table entirely (don't add a row for it), so it has zero effect on the weighted average. If your school requires Pass/Fail courses to count toward total credits but not toward the grade average, you can also add the row but leave "Credit Hours" blank or set it to 0 — with 0 credits, it won't affect the calculation even if it's listed.

Can I enter decimal credit hours, like a 0.5-credit lab?

Yes — the Credit Hours field accepts decimals (e.g. 0.5, 1.5). As long as it matches what your school actually assigns, the calculation logic works exactly the same and won't produce errors from decimal values.

What happens if I enter a score above 100 or a negative number?

The Score field is designed for a standard 0-100 percentage scale. Entering a number outside that range won't break the weighted average calculation, but the GPA conversion table is built around 0-100 brackets, so the GPA result may not be meaningful for out-of-range values. For accurate results, always enter a standard 0-100 percentage score.

Is the course name, credit, and score data I enter saved or uploaded anywhere?
